kkt Same difference, as had there been a democracy in place, they would never have attacked us. You might note that both world wars were started by dictators, not by democratically elected governments. Maybe...

Those are interesting cases, yes. Germany less so, because they had a democratic government for several elections before the nazis stopped elections. Several things that made Japan an exception: they fought hard and were utterly defeated in the war, compared to Saddam's army that mostly couldn't wait to surrender. Japan is a unified county, not about to split into ethnic and religious factions. The occupation was fully staffed and funded, unlike Iraq. The occupation lasted for seven years, twice as long as we've been in Iraq so far. The occupation of Japan was not motivated by oil or personal revenge.

I seem to have forgotten the part where he invaded Saudi Arabia already. When did that happen?

He probably didn't consider the kurds to be his own people. To him, they were a dangerous minority group. Funny how that wasn't a problem for us at the time, and Turkish suppression of the SAME minority group has been tolerated all along. Not that it means gbutting them is okay, but if we have to lie about the reasons for invading Iraq perhaps that means the invasion isn't such a good idea.

kkt So is it the motivation that determines whether a people should be freed from a despot? Same war. He came across the border into Suadi Arabia, but US...

Perhaps that would have been the occbuttion for a domestic overthrow and installation of a less odious regime.

And there's also a significant and committed minority in favor of keeping them legal. It's not just gun manufacturers.
