The last one I knew was the one that DEC "owned". That was getting phased out by 1990; this is done by making the premiums so high that all employees are forced to opt for the HMO or some flavor of "managed care" that has been outsourced. Even then, the medical administrative buttistants would block access to the services provided by this medical plan. When Jim died, the plan would pay 70% and the ill person would pay the rest. The service delivery was excellent if you knew how to runaround the admin of the HMO which had to be the first choice of service delivery.

This was a hint of how the biz was going to evolve.

But who administers it? Do you have go through an HMO layer?

Now extrapolate the evolution. In this country, it will evolve to politicians who tell you who that physician (or somebody else) will be. Now imagine a person who hasn't had intimate experience with the process of being ill and suddenly gets sick. There is no way that this person will be able to just call the doctor next door (these don't exist anymore, which is another indication of how the biz is changing) and fall onto the examining table.

IOW, condition such as strep, flu, and other common afflictions are not going to get treated just in time.

Now think about a public situation where all this paperwork bullpoo has to be ignored. It's a ticking time plant whose clock registers 00:00:03 until boom time.

The law just pbutted here is counting on the Fed government to pay for most of it. As far back as Dukakis administration (which was in the early 80s) no medical person wanted to provide service to people on Medicare because the state took 9 months to pay the bills that was funded by the Fed.

And now the law is forcing everybody to get this insurance. You don't have a choice.
