We will have to differ on this, my thesis is that having a healthy trucking system is a good thing , adding flexibility to the transport system, and preventing either labour or owners having a neck-lock on transport, as they would if railways were the preferred means of long distance transport. I will look uo those Californian costings when I have time, interesting stuff.
This is the present system used here. subsistance pensions are paid out of a part of the tax system, the government is trying to move to systems whereby people invest over their lives for pensions. Unfortunatly, the woeful record for investment companys over the internet boom, and low interest rates (plus the boom in property prices, making property an attractive option), is working against what seems to be a sensible idea. The movement of manufacturing to the East is another problem, if The (Chung-Waa, imaginary name) computer manufacturing company is going well, how do you invest in it?... how do you obtain information on it?.. given that ownership of anything in China is very fuzzy (the old communist system is there still, under all the glitz) investing in Chinese industry is not, as the accountants say, suitable for the funds of widows and orphans.
