The Pankian Metaphor 3093Did your biz treat batch control files as TTY input? Ours did and the device was called PTY (pseudo TTY). A technique to get a PHB to feel like he's useful is to ask him to hold the string. You have to give helpful people something to do that will stay out of your way while you're getting the real work done. The trick is to give an buttignment that really does do some good. I don't know what our customers did w.r.t. scheduling tweaking. In the timesharing biz, limiting resources only peees people off. IIRC, we always shipped with these limits at max and left the limiting based on hardware, such as memory, disk quotas, etc. I vaguely recall JMF writing about schedulars but I have no idea where any of that stuff is. It probably doesn't exist. I don't remember enough to even think that it was submitted under a DEC retrieval number. The Pankian Metaphor 3095 No. And you can't today. The whole point of virtual memory was to allow programs to have address space greater than physical memory. You... Somebody wrote up a story here about a guy who used to tune his PDP-10 stand alone with a dial. When processors changed, a new dial had to be drilled into the skin so he could tune his code. It was hooked to nothing but it made him very happy. Whatever works. I think men always will need something to fiddle with. silliness taken wing Names skills to do data processing ? BAH
