Screen real estate is not much of a concern because it's not something that has a direct cost - no-one's paying extra to scroll, and certainly not the huge amounts that multiplying bandwidth costs across all servers and all users leads to. Hard disk space and bandwidth usage aren't improved by rearranging the same information into a more "compact" format. And a sig of 10 lines averaging 20 characters each takes up no more bandwidth than four lines averaging 53 characters each.

I agree that sigs that are too large in terms of bytes are a problem, but the "4 lines by 80 characters" convention requires information to be packed tightly with no actual savings of bandwidth - in fact, it could take up slightly more bandwidth as the information is arranged to align and separate columns
