One of the first Irish Republicans, Patrick Pearse, planned the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916, for the same reason, to provoke popular unrest in reaction to the authorities reaction. Revolutionaries do that.

I was watching CNN1 one night, about ten minutes is as much as I can take, anyway, a lawyer was advocating shooting people on sight, torture, and mbutt extermination as usefull tools for inclusion in new laws. The interviewer treated him as a sane, civilized person.
Local politician was in the US recently. He goes there fairly frequently, relatives there. He said that its like the Six Counties (Norn Ireland), in that you no longer mention politics after the first physical buttault, with a split between those how absolutely hate George W, and those who feel that they have to support them.. He also said that getting there is now a major hbuttle.
