I first met RMS the same day I first met Cliff Stoll (he was giving a talk about his then problems at LBL), we all had dinner together chance syncing, we were in Berkeley for different reasons. Richard just has different priorities. As does Cliff. Cliff is just high enthusastic (Same with RMS.), swung by his house after I got back from Europe.

BTW, Dennis Ritchie is also very nice in person. Buy him a beer. I just finished with a series of meetings at Stanford which included the 40th Ann. of the founding of the CS Dept...

I don't know Linus well; I gave him a tape of Linus Pauling whom I was told he was named after.

DEK is very nice when you can reach him, but you have to be very conscious of protecting his time and privacy. I have his home phone number, and he does a number of events with the Museum, because he is very conscious about history. Every minute of his time when you are with him, you can't help but think one is setting back completion of Volumes. One gets to know his secretaries (Phyllis was a kick). He tries to be rounded (he took a clbutt taught by another friend in a different dept. at Stanford, and it was amusing to watch him as a student). I have a couple of bottles of wine for him. He gets invited all over the world. Stanford is very fortunate to have him.

Seems nice. I know Frankston better. Bob may seem a little hyper to many, Bob is really neat (he thinks very fast and is well read).
