But to go back far enough to qualify for this newsgroup, I remember... Ah. Again, "95% chance of working" isn't my experience, but whatever. There *are* some quirks in the traditional Unix toolkit -- I'd mention inconsistencies in the one-letter options for some of the commands, and the near-impossibility of writing shell scripts that deal correctly with all legal filenames (just getting them to work with names that include blanks is nontrivial) -- but IME one is apt to forgive these things if one otherwise likes the environment, and find them reasons to want a 10-foot pole if not. snip Funny how that works (one bad experience early on, and forever .... ) (vi has scripting abilities allowing loops? hm.) My early experience with emacs involved two slightly different versions on different platforms, while vi seemed to be the same everywhere. Now I think it's vi that's likely to be different on different platforms ("real" vi, or vim, or nvi, etc.). But by then .... But it's a peccadillo, where in another tool it might be a mortal sin, maybe.
So, you're all warmed up to take on fans of .... I'm not even sure what the most loathsome editor in Windowsland might be -- and it's probably not on-topic for a.f.c. anyway. -- B. L. Mbuttingill ObDisclaimer: I don't speak for my employers; they return the favor.
