snip I'm glad you're not in charge of hiring and firing decisions in my department, then. This is someone who has been teaching beginning programming with apparent success for, oh...

When I taught some introductory courses, standard documentation, formatting, layout, comment, compilation, end, and submission requirements were specified; email or floppy media submissions were accepted, and the same medium used to return an annotated version. Program source code was run through the compiler with all warnings enabled, messages merged with the source, explanatory notes added on what the messages meant and why they were important, with additional notes on approach and style. A noted problem in a first buttignment might not be marked down, but repebreastion of similar problems was marked increasingly harshly, with references back to previous buttignments and notes. There always seemed to be about 1-3 who got what they were about, and 2-3 who struggled through the course, most of those struggling at progressively higher levels over time, but some encountered the same difficulties from beginning to end. I have come across a few of the latter in various shops, and often management will not believe they have no grasp of a problem or a solution approach, despite asking the same questions day after day, and receiving increasingly explicit help, just short of writing all of the code.
