It's not just the social atbreastude. It's the fault of the system that some kid reinstalling Windows needs a 4 year degree to get past the HR department doing the hiring. There's no way a 4 year degree should be required for employment in all cases in IT work -- but it happens. I've run into issues not having the degree in the field, (mine was history-political science), but I've got over 20 years in the industry now. The guys swapping pc hardware now usually have at least a 2 year degree. The degree doesn't necessarily have any tie to the job function and any degree is the door opener. The problem is that they use the degree process to weed out people from the hiring pool that have a bad work ethic -- and that ain't what school is for. The use of degrees and certificates as a gatekeeper to hiring seems to be common. I think it's because HR tries too hard to remove the load from the hiring manager and too often mediocre folks with the right paper are all the hiring manager sees.
