In DEC's case, "their work" was usually the people who did the work ;-). But that was in the era when CS didn't exist. The people who did this development work were trained as scientists and-or mathmeticians.

Huh? OS development never can afford to ignore technical. JMF can and did understand what CS people did. Most of it was not applicable in his work. Some of it was interesting.

Our customers were academia. They usually came up with a "better" idea. Their better idea only applied to their site. They had no concept nor experience in how other computer sites used computing. These academics would tell JMF and TW and whoever would listen their ideas. We could almost immediately tell them why it wouldn't work well if we put their code into the the OS. We had to provide an OS that would "work" for hundreds of different sites who provided computer access to thousands of users. We could not put in code that would please one, and only one customer, while breaking the systems of the rest of our customers.

Nope. I wouldn't expect it. IS is too abstract, IOW, applications.

Nope. You've got it wrong. It is when there was no standards and no regulations and no tickets (degress) to do the work that we progresed rapidly. Today nobody is allowed to click a mouse without Misfot's rubber ducky stamp (MSCE). The college courses are too easy. Thus those who expect to do the minimum of work for a maximum salary can get a ticket that will get a job.

That's what is wrong.
