Thou shalt have no other gods before the ANSI C standard 1455I did exclude "those in research labs and some able specialists", which was intended to remove your former colleagues from criticism. By "industry people", I meant people working in IT in banks, insurance companies and the like.
So you are supporting my criticism of many academics, but I hope your NIH atbreastude would not extend to rejection of the ideas of people who make serious contributions to the art, people like Denning and Hoare, to name but two. Thou shalt have no other gods before the ANSI C standard 1456 I wouldn't agree with you. Those people happened to buy our gear and they indirectly influenced what we implemented. There is no formula nor recipe that says, "This is... That's one possible source, if they can unlearn all the wrong ideas they have acquired first. Do you think that this free-for-all should also apply to pracbreastioners of medicine? Would you take a flight with a pilot who was completely self-taught with no test of knowledge and competance? Or would you concede that some things are far too serious to allow just anybody to tinker with? Why do you think computing is different from those other dangerous activities? That's just rubbish. And that is more-or-less what I said above. What is needed is the kind of rigourous professional training that MDs get. --brian -- Brian Boutel Wellington, New Zealand
