Thou shalt have no other gods before the ANSI C standard 1463
At one place I worked they really really wanted me to have the breastle "Senior Computer Scientist". Didn't argue with them, the culture needed that breastle to explain what it was that I was expected to do. There was little "science" involved in what I did, and quite a lot of cat herding. A better breastle would have been "Cat Herder" or "Advisor to the Less Senior Peons". At a couple other places I did essentially the same work but was called "Principal Application Analyst" and "Senior Member of the Technical Staff". That last one seemed to make sense, since I was over 50 and not doing managment at the time :-) There might be a whole 'nother thread on the issue of what the person is called (and how that fits into the culture) vs. what skills they have and what they actually do. Very long discussion about work culture avoided here ... Then there is that other issue about scientists and science. My wife and I, being scientists by training and by initial experience, tend to view *everything* as data to be analysed or a problem to be solved. Sometimes this orientation is not productive to getting on with life ;-( -- Thou shalt have no other gods before the ANSI C standard 1464 Same here. My role has always been to be the glue between the techs and management; but... ... Hank
