truly do

Because it worked.

In the process of developing a solution I generally develop the proof that the solution is correct. If I can't prove it's...

Yes. Because it worked.

Not all the time. I can remember times when JMF would finally figure out why a certain patch fixed things. I can remember one time when he finally figured something out; it was three-five years after he fixed the problem.

One of our comm guys told the story about one of his firefights. He spent IIRC almost a week with no sleep at the customer site making stuff work. When he finally got back home with his code, it took him 4 months to figure out why it worked.

See the two tales above. It is anecdotal; it is also fact. But it's not documented in any citable paper.

GODDAMMIT! We've been telling you that it isn't science.

It's a good one because it worked.

And we never claimed it was science. In fact, we would claim the opposite. It is you who seems to be claiming that the only thing that should be taught is the science. We are telling you, No.

Then you never talked about any of the interesting problems. You need to get into greater detail and get them to tell you stories. If you keep insisting on scientific facts, you will never get those people to tell you about anything else.

I butture you that they have a lot of stories that will not fit into your science mold. Perhaps, the fact that you only want science thingies keeps them from telling you the other bits of knowledge they have.
