David Wagner GIVE AN ANECDOTE. That's a bit more in the political arena. The "bit...

Nope. Prototype.

But it's this "eventually" that Japan interrupts with their reverse engineering. The time span has become shorter and shorter for the originators because others buy the first commercial thingie, take it apart and then produce a manufacturing production line to mbutt produce it. This kills the incentive to innovate anything.

The only thing I can of to undo this future mess is partner with Japan businesses who are extremely versatile in altering production lines. This is another area where the unions in the US have kept businesses backwards.

If it's just a name, then all innovation stopped after the first ship, no matter what the product is.

Sigh! Enron is a clbuttic example of what happens when Congress starts to tell a business sector how to run themselves. One of the reasons I've kept this discussion going is because I can see Congress deciding to fix our problems. AFAICT, everytime they've done that, a very expensive disaster happened. S&Ls were their 80s debacle. Oil was the 70s (distribution controls to monitor consumption). I was too young in the 50s and 60s to know what was going on.
