Most of them use generators to recharge their batteries. If they have a cash register, it's run off an inverter. Amish are NOT Luddites. They don't fear electricity, nor do they think it evil. They just refuse to hook up to the grid, so that it doesn't get too convenient. Same goes with telephones. In NE Indiana, the Old Order Amish don't use land lines as a rule, but it's very common to see them talking on cellphones as they travel in their buggies. It's a pain to keep them charged up, so their talk tends to be minimal. When I lived in Milan Center, I'd have neighbors asking to use the phone 3 or 4 times a week. Not a problem for us; we enjoyed the company. They'd call the lumberyard to check on a delivery, or call the horse vet, who lived about 35 miles away. Nice folks, but then, I think *most* people are, if you give them half a chance. The Amish are not (and do not claim to be) any better, nor any worse, than bbutt fishermen, or motorcyclists, or body builders, or campers, or people who watch reality television - it's just another lifestyle.
