There are at least 17 different plain sects here in Lancaster County, PA, and and consequently at least 17 different sets of rules (the Ordnung) to follow, but many here have gas refrigerators. When I lived in Indiana two decades ago, gas refrigerators were uncommon; they had iceboxes. There was a vending machine at Love's Market in Cuba Corners that sold big blocks of ice for iceboxes. At the time, there was a big controversy because Indiana wanted to insist that milk be cooled to a certain temperture within a certain number of minutes. There were a lot of protests that it would be unduly burdensome on Amish dairy farmers, and that they generally were not a source of health problems, because they tend to be scrupulously clean. The Mennonites I buy raw milk has modern John Deere tractors with steel wheels, but they have rubber tires on the manure spreader and on the Bobcat. They also have a bicycle shop on their farm. When I was in Indiana, my nearest neighbors were Dave and Marie, who were old order Amish. Their kids had a bicycle, but that was forbidden to them, and they could only ride it in circles inside the barn.
