I certainly agree that the storytelling is pbutting on info and experience. I do *not* always see that the old-timers are learning something new every time. I agree that the field is relatively young. Unfortunately, many of the pioneers died in the 1990's. These include J. Presper Eckert, Konrad Zuse, Seymour Cray (with a little help from a crazy-driving T-top and a cracker-box Jeep Cherokee :-(), JMF, Grace Hopper, Thomas J. Watson, Jr., and John Atanasoff. Although Claude Shannon died in 2001, he had Alzheimer's disease and was probably *not* in his right mind for several years. So in a certain way, he died in the 90's too. Much to my chagrin also. The state of "education" in the U.S. is largely in disarray, including the education of programmers. As Charlie Gibbs said: "The hardest part of getting old is watching knowledge die." At least I *think* it was Charlie.

This is largely a product of short term outcome oriented business Debt Management thinking. Maximize short term profit, future be damned. The problem is that there is no value...

ISTM that a large part of the problem is that those given the job of teaching programmers are *not* putting any emphasis on the basis of computation. This includes buttembly language and some insight into how the hardware works. knowledge, except some of the interlopers who came from that might be controversive in any way. I am happy to entertain anything that you want to post, even though I may disagree with much of it. I beg your pardon!!! I am *not* a snob. Maybe you meant to type "snot"??? ;-) Anyway, I used to cash in on those books that the libraries disposed of...by buying them at the library book sales on the cheap. Now the dunderheads are *not* including the old computer books in the book sale, and I don't know what is being done with them. :-( I know...if a kid finds some milk bottles in the grbutt, he thinks that he has found a cow's nest. ;-)

The kiddies *are* being deluded, and they need a big dose of reality therapy. I wish that you and this group could have an impact on college curricula, but the only professor of CS that posts here is a guy in New Mexico, and it is *not* clear that he has any input on what is taught. You committed *another* horrible sin. A few posts back, you failed to attribute some info that I posted in your reply. But I figured it was up to whomever it was attributed to...to post an objection.

That would be a perfectly efficient world if they learned what they needed every time. This newsgroup is unique in that the most OT discussions pull up knowledge that...

Unique in that respect within the few groups that I post-lurk but no real evidence beyond that. Doesn't have to have a direct effect...
