And the US consistently acted in a fair manner with Iran and Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the Emirates; and performed joint ventures with technology transfer in deals that were 50 years ahead of their time. Iran got out of hand mainly because of British mismanagement, and the US got off on a wrong foot after the Shah was reinstated in the 50's.
The two turning points were the Suez crisis in 1956, when France and Britain tried to force Egypt and Nbutter back from a nationalization program by invading. The US had to call a halt, and therefore "Nbutterism", the radical, mostly non-religous movement grew because the US stopped the Europeans (and Israel) from crushing it. The next turning point was the Yom Kippur war in the seventies where Israel put a nuclear ultimatum to the US, and Nixon decided to support Israel instead of seeing a nuclear war unfold in the middle east. The US has mostly been the dog that has been wagged by it's tail in middle eastern policy. I think it is incredible that the US has let the other parties get along with as much as they have. Now, with 9-11 the arabs have little chance of winning back US public support. This suits the extremists well. They WANT the US as an enemy. US Military Dead during Iraq War 1056 Yup.
