The whole idea of terrorism is "shock and awe." You want the people to freak out over the idea that their political leaders can't protect them. That doesn't mean that middle American locations are off...

Hard currency = a world traded currency such as could be used to buy WMD materials on the open market. It takes more than a few million $ to build an effective WMD. Most of...

I liked the LA-120, and even the LA-36. Compared to an ASR33 they were heavensent. Quiet, fast, easy to setup and use, reliable, and easier to move around from room to room. IT EVEN HAD LOWER CASE!!!! Well, a reasonable facsimile of lower case, the font didn't have descenders. For those of use too poor to get a daisy wheel, it made a great word processing printer.

Offically (as opposed to unofficial, private involvement), only since WWII have we been involved in a big way in the Middle East. Until then, it was Britain and France who were the meddlers (after...

Bets of all, I got a brand new LA36 for free. While installing a PDP 11-34, the customer announced he didn't want a printing console. He already had a VT 100, so he demanded (!) we remove the LA36, even though it was bundled in the price. I was happy to cart it off to the dump (my house).

It was a common practice on VMS systems to connect line printers to serial lines. The reason was that serial DECservers (ethernet serial port concentrators) were relatively cheap, but the DECserver 250 (Centronics parallel port version) was expensive and only ran one printer. Tough luck if you had an LPT with a Dataproducts interface. A DECserver offloaded a lot of hardware overhead from the CPU(s) onto the terminal concentrator, plus it put the printer on ethernet (move the 1200LPM printer across the building? sure, no problem....). It also allowed for cluster failover on printing.

The catch with configuring DECserver application ports (for printers) is that if it wasn't done right, a printer-modem-timeclock-whatever could literally attempt to log in as an interactive device. So it is theoretically possible for a rigged serial printer to recognize the output for a VMS login prompt, and then attempt to break in, perhaps with the often forgotten field service account. At some point DEC did make the default for FIELD to be disabled, can't remember if there was ever a VMS version where the default was enabled. I never had DEC set up a VMS system for me, and never ever used the infamous pre-installed FIS version of VMS, so I don't know if it was a standard practice to enable a FIELD account for DEC installs.
