Very slow booting and running and braindead OS's 4536
Right. I think PMs were in our contracts to occur once-month. Very slow booting and running and braindead OS's 4539 Yes. Now you got it :-). It was in our shop because of the way we had to have a system up and timesharing, no matter who had what system stand alone and firefights. Firefights were... Yup. That was one approach. Our SMP implementation allowed tightly coupled to SUSPEND the system, split up the physical hardware, then resume the system. The monitor would reconfigure based on what the operator had taken offline. It was crude but quite elegant for that time in the biz. I would have liked to have had the guys funded to do more work with the goal of 7x24 availability of the running system. But that was software and I had hardware engineers inform me that all systems were taken down when they went home at 17:00. I couldn't correct this woodenheaded atbreastude. I still don't know what I could have done to kick these buttes in the butt. Our customers wanted this. By that time they got a taste and the rumors of SMP were starting to spread, Bell had made his idiotic speech and all projects having to do with the PDP-10 had been cancelled and the people moved to different VMS-VAX projects. This is why Digital started the policy to not ship sources. I understood the sentiment but I always thought it was a bad idea. We never did figure out how to handle customer bugs reported as ours efficiently. I still think about this once in a while. I haven't come up with a good idea. Very slow booting and running and braindead OS's 4537 Modern USB or Firewire is a lot faster than what disks need, and they are designed for being... Very slow booting and running and braindead OS's 4538 Several concepts are getting confused together -- one is the "boot media", and one is "the root filesystem...
Those will get you ever time :-). Did people stop talking to each other then? I could see some disintegration when the PDP-10 product line moved to Marlboro and the mini people never saw the main frame people in the halls to say hi to. It made it easier for Bell to demonize the -10 groups and blame them for all of Digital's problems. This habit continued until after the 9000 (I think that's the correct number). BAH
