Want a Fast Computer 1338

You don't have to be so destructive.

They work perfectly well as soon as you remove the "XP" bit. I now run Fedora Core 3 on my laptop, and even Linux is blazening fast compared to redmond alternatives (but a dog compared to some BSDs).

We are doing a real effort to roll this out into a larger company. We sometimes have bouts of "windows envy" when some snazzy thing arrives; but it pbuttes very quickly when the owners start their driver song and dance.

I have two programs left in a windows environment. It is Euronav, a navigation program (built with tools that should migrate to Linux in a weekend BTW, but they refuse). And the program for my dive computer. Sorry, Suunto, but if you don't support Linux PDQ I'll change.

But back to the destructiveness;

I have a major PC recirculation thing going on among friends, that take old computers, install Linux or BSD; and voila, a usable box for the kids. Linux also has a pretty respectable set of games now. Now my mom even has a linux box. I have gotten tired of cleaning the Windows box of virii and malware 1, and she now has a parallell linux installation on the old PC; and a cpu switch for monitor+mouse+keyboard.

1 Clean W2k install June 2004. Includes a full suit of Norman firewall and anti-malware programs with auto-update on; and was current with MS update as I left. I also added a dedicated hardware firewall (SMC) with every firewall bit turned on. Arrive in late october and find a current virus database, but 24 malware programs and 2 virii. There were not any major outstanding MS upgrades either according to the MS update site.

This is ths sort of environment that is unsupportable in a large company.
