Because a debugging session of a device driver that you just wrote doesn't need a test for every bug. We would have never shipped anything if we had to write...

re:

oh and some of the dumb terminals weren't necessarily so dumb ... there were also things like huge numbers of ATM (automatic teller, aka cash) machines

I don't believe that there are good emulators. Sure, they're better than before. But they are not good where good means they work with a 99.9% success. Doesn't anybody believe in...

for other drift ... recent post mentioning early work at los gatos lab on cash machines

for sna dumb terminal drift

from above:

The original United network environment consisted of approximately 20,000 dumb terminals connected to three separate networks: an SNA-based network connecting into IBM mainframes for business applications; a Unisys-based network whose processors did all of the operational types of programs for the airline such as crew and flight schedules and aircraft weights and balance; and the Apollo network, which connected users to the airline's reservation system for all pbuttenger information, seat buttignments, etc. That meant that for every airport that United flew into, it had to have three separate telephone circuits--one for each network. According to Ken Cieszynski, United's senior engineer in Networking Services, it was a very costly, cumbersome and labor-intensive system for operating and maintaining a business.

... snip ...

my wife was in conflict with the SNA group from early on ... having co-authored (compebreastive) AWP39 peer-to-peer networking architecture during the early days of SNA, did battle with them when she was in POK responsible for loosely-coupled (cluster mainframe) architecture,

and then later when we were out pushing 3-tier architecture

along the way she also did a short stint as chief architect for amadeus ... where she got into trouble backing x.25 based network design as an alternate to SNA based network implementation.

misc. past post mentioning amadeus
