What ever happened to Tandem and NonStop OS 1965What ever happened to Tandem and NonStop OS 1966 I have no idea when. I think I'd guess at one the PDP-8s. We were doing a lot of stuff. Our customers were doing even more. puzzled emoticon here A PeeCee flavored...
When did DEC first make a microcomputer? Was it the Rainbow? Do you think that DEC took their LS-11 seriously? If so, then why did they simply let it die?
Compared to the Pentium and the PowerPC the Alpha was a failure. And when it failed so did DEC. Then where are they today? They got in late and for reasons already stated. I attened the Alpha seminar. I also went to the Motorola 68040 and PowerPC ones. From that ALONE, I knew DEC was in trouble. Sure, they had minor success, but since they literally were behind, both Intel and Motorola, by getting out with the LSI-11, by the time they tried to get back in they were behind Sun and the RISC workstation idea as well. They wer following not leading.
For maybe three years. When it was time for the Alpha to evolve it was too late. And that cost them the company. You're blind! What ever happened to Tandem and NonStop OS 1967 Distribution: PDPs were minis turned maxis... A mircocomputer has as its CPU a microprocessor, unless you can clarify that... RISC changed that. The problem was that eventually the LSI-11 went away and enter a... Apple is going Intel. Sun and SGI have Intel boxes in their production lines. Linux uses Intel and IBM and others sell Linux boxes. DEC going Intel didn't kill them, but it wasn't enough to save them either. Sun is at a curious crossroads to this very point. How much do they sink into their Intel lines as comapred to their SPARC lines? Their fate could be DECs if they choose wrong! Eric
