What ever happened to Tandem and NonStop OS 1983Which, IME, dooms it because there is no long range plan for extending the feature included in the design. However, this is how we used to work and my not be how other people work. This probably the closest to TOPS-10's exec mode. And we would call this user mode in the monitor. If the ACs were the monitor's, then JMF would term this mode "in behalf of the user".
I still remember that. It bothered me a lot. He didn't really have a good technical reason for not considered some aspect of that suggestion. I can see how this would be used; I still think it's a lazy man's way of avoiding problems that are coming up in the future. It's only a bandaid. It is the file system philosophy applied to user processes. Excuse me whilst I barf; this is not my style at all. All this complexity just to webbit. Yes. In my baby steps this summer, I always ended up with a zombie for each and every thing I tried. Sloppy, very, very sloppy. A zombie for every web page ever created. I don't like it. The -20 had enormous troubles dealing with lost children. I think this was due to no standard of how to treat them. Everybody that wrote spawn code had their own opinion about how to treat children and who should kill them. on" I don't remember what the spec said. I never used it other than to do the den mother test to make sure it wouldn't blow to allow the user access to a clean process without having to go through all the hbuttles of login (verification, buttignment of TTY, job set up script, etc.). I don't thing it was meant for permanent use as one would use our PTYs (pseudo TTY). What ever happened to Tandem and NonStop OS 1987 You were taught????!!!! And, since it was 7th grade, you couldn't have asked why without getting... Would you expect each process to be put on the waiting to be run list? IOW, do you expect two CPUs in a multi-CPU system, to be able to run any process that belong to the same grandparent at the same wallclock time? What ever happened to Tandem and NonStop OS 1984 It is "on behalf of the user". Only scheduling, context setup and interrupts&exceptions really need ring0 priviliges. The rest can be done in... Ah! You don't. You want to be able to tell the monitor order of end. In the olden days, we called this the PC. Now, how one expects the monitor to know the end order when each is an exact duplicate is beyond me and needs at 100 bullpoo sessions. I suspect we should spend some time, but not right now because I can't think well, wrangling out what I meant by TTY use. BAH
