What ever happened to Tandem and NonStop OS 2058
What ever happened to Tandem and NonStop OS 2059 Eric Chomko I would be interested to see how my SWTPC's are still in production compared to -11s. Therefore it's not a fully qualified system... Duh... The SWTPC 6800 was just as reliable as a PDP-11. I know that's saying something, but there it is. Altair, as well as many others did have stability problems, to be sure. Yes and no. The Sol-20 was a reliable system, too, as long as it was properly put together. Kit computers had the problem that they were all too often buttembled by novices with no idea about electronic buttembly and checkout. Well how much is your uptime worth? Micros costed in the lower 4 figures. A PDP? Middle 5 figures, plus contract? The thing about comparing minis to micros is a similar argument comparing mainframes to minis. PDPs were a good argument for the latter. Are you saying you can't see a similar argument against the PDP in the former?
If the MicroVax was so great, then why even go with the Alpha? If the LSI-11 was a miniature PDP-11 and the MicroVax was a miniature Vax, then what was the Alpha a miniature of? I liked working on MicroVaxez, but who could afford one? Wrote DCL and became pretty good at it way before I wrote my first Unix shell script. Today I use Perl. What ever happened to Tandem and NonStop OS 2060 Production or in use? What PDPs are being "produced"? I'm sure many are still in use... Eric
