It won't be long before this won't do, as PCs are starting to drop the serial ports.

I found out just how bad things were two years ago, when I went around trying to find a modem that would do DTE at 76800bps, because that was the top speed of the system in question. A lot of neo-geeks tried to be condescending "explaining" to me that a modem can only do 56Kbps, not 76.8Kbps.

I kept trying to tell them I was talking about the DTE speed, the serial connection to the computer, but couldn't get my message through.

When I finally did in one shop, the sales droid trimphantly declared, "Oh, these are much better than that. They can do 115Kbps!"

I really with manufacturers would not do that. It causes no end of grief, and as above, I never can seem to get the message across that just because it will fit, doesn't mean it is supposed to.

Amazing.

Did they try to blame it on you as well?

Hiring these days is a bloody mess, and HR does far too much of the process, and rarely has any idea how to hire good people.

They hire people based on how they look, how well they kiss butt, and what buzzwords they are complaint with.

Technical issues be damned, HR usually isn't interested, or simply doesn't know.

They don't understand what the difference is between computer science and "IT", nor do they understand the difference between a "technical worker" and someone with a degree in applied science (or otherwise taught how to learn).

cp67 shipped source code maintenance. the 6-23-68 plus 1 unbundling accouncement started charging-licensing application software ... however kernel software was still free (under the theory it was required for the hardware). mainstream batch systems shipped...

HR often weeds out a lot of good people before the real hiring manager ever gets to interview them.

It's easy in such circumstances for a fast talking and politically send walking disaster to get in the door.
