Learn to read, Eric.

I have no idea what you mean by "computer people" (computer users? computer professionals?). What I meant was "most people who use computers". Obviously, most of the people living in the world today have never heard of Microsoft Windows, and wouldn't give a damn about it if they had.

My point remains: claiming that "windows" must refer to Microsoft Windows demonstrates a poor grasp of the relevant history.

"Kerberos FTP" is a vague term for any FTP implementation that happens to support Kerberos authentication, or perhaps to FTP sessions that use Kerberos; it's really not very meaningful except in a particular context. It has precious little to do with Kerberos. There are many Kerberos-enabled applications.

"SFTP" is an SSH-based file transfer application. A number of SSH implementations support Kerberos authentication. It's entirely possible to use SFTP with Kerberos.

Really, why do you make these bizarre claims without knowing anything about the subject? Kerberos only "appears to have been replaced" by SFTP if you're generalizing from a poorly-understood anecdote.

None, since I prefer to avoid writing GUI applications in the first place. I have better things to do with my time than cook eye candy.

Sorry, that wasn't clear. If that's what you meant I'll retract my retort. I think that's likely, yes. I think more than half the people...

It's been so long since I had to write a GUI app (that I didn't just front-end with HTML) that I couldn't even say for sure what I last used. I've written a number of them that call Xlib directly; I've written several that call Xt and-or Xaw. I don't think I've written a GUI application for X since Tcl-Tk was first released to the public.

If I happened to need to write one now, in the absence of other constraints, I'd be tempted to write it in Ruby; it'd be a good opportunity to play. Ruby supports a number of GUI toolkits, including Tk.
