Cripes, the "reading comprehension" jibe is nearly as ubiquitous as claiming Godwin's Law.

NO! Part of my point was that DEC didn't know whether to be a HW company or SW company. It came up with Alpha after a decade-plus hiatus in chip manufacturing and then tried to work the SW angle with it.

No, the problem is that Gordon Bell didn't know. The rest of the people in DEC knew. And, here, you are just plain outright wrong. You have absolutely no idea...

Too bad DEC didn't give VMS away to other RISC manufacturers in a manner to spread it beyond Unix and NT users. The VMS niche outside DEC may have been something.

I'm seeing Windows work its way into areas that are taboo (low -level programming) and am horrified by it!

Alpha trying to suppot VMS, Unix and Windows NT.

Look, DEC had VMS, they tried to adopt Unix and NT, but nobody wanted them to do the latter two to a degree that they could replace M$ or Sun and SGI.

I don't doubt that. In fact, I think HP is better for DEC than was Compaq (my opinion).

Okay, okay! In 25 words of less, please state IYO why DEC no longer exists as a company. You claim I don't know what I'm talking about...fine...enlighten me!

Eric
