What ever happened to Tandem and NonStop OS 2120
On Thu, 01 Sep 2005 14:04:39 +0000, greymaus The CLI had been resembling UNIX since 1985. Can you be a little more specific? The addition of the PIPE: device, perhaps? The addition of aliases...

toys The was

The pieces that were profitable had been sold to other companies, some of whom are still making that stuff. Compaq wanted the tech support group and that's all. They got some stuff that was not a profit center, like software development groups, etc. Do you know what a profit center is? Do you know what a cost center is?

Retail is a long way from a manufacturing plant. You have absolutely no idea how people work when they manufacture computer gear.

Not at all. Cheaper doesn't mean poo if it doesn't work. The only reason Unix took off is because 1. ATT got out of the licensing biz and 2. Some random coder wrote an OS with the Unix philosophy and acquired a core group of developers interesting in working on this code long-term. The fact that this hobby-horse continues is a miracle IMO.

that

Alphas ran this stuff. What is it with your obsession about workstations? DEC never really wanted to get into a workstation-only biz.

1. Unix was not a DEC OS that brought in money. 2. DEC was not in the workstation business. It was a hardware manufacturer. 3. Workstations are a PITA to support and maintain. 4. Most of DEC still believed that customers should be able to pick and choose what they ran on the systems they bought.

So what? That was Sun's business plan.

when i was doing page replacement algorithms as undergraduate in the 60s one of the principles was to perform overhead directly related to some activity and-or resource...

So? I never looked at Alpha architecture. JMF did its CPU driver. I don't think he considered it as RISCy as the -10. It doesn't matter what the nomenclature was. What mattered is that customers liked the Alpha.

Nope. That is similar to expecting kindergarteners to be able to create daVinci masterpieces. The OS biz is still an art form.

Ma'am, to you.

You are certainly having a reading breakdown. the

I give up. Plonk.
