Was there 1982-3?: heard and could smell the results of a head crash on RM05 drive X; called it in to DEC Field Circus and advised them to bring the RM05 head and alignment kits; FS guy appears, pooh-poohs our diagnosis and insists on mounting diagnostic pack in crashed drive, and try in another 4 drives, while alarmed operator looks on, and I'm alerting the manager to major down; 5 drives, 100 heads, 3 days to express that number of heads in from all over DEC NA, install, align, and test the drives; major complaint from corporate HQ global account VP to DEC FS corporate HQ VP; no charge for repair. Something similar happened with a PDP-11-70 MMU board; seen it before, recognized the symptoms; called it in and advised them to bring the MMU kit; arrogant regional FS "specialist" appears, pooh-poohs our diagnosis, had the machine in pieces for days, until it was escalated and he finally swapped the MMU board, fixing the problem; no charge for repair. The multinational involved moved their global base from DEC to IBM rather than take a chance on Digital's VAX plans.
