That would work for manufacturing. It wouldn't work for the usual soft-hardware development work. If you get an idea, you have to work it now before it's gone. How many times did you get up in the middle of night and go into work because you finally got an idea about the pesky problem you'ld been gnawing on for the last week.

Would you really go back to sleep and wait to see if your solution worked? My curiosity wouldn't let me go back to sleep.

The only reason I wanted to be salaried is so 1. I didn't have to stop what I was doing to fill out a time card and 2. I didn't have get permission to get the work done. I hated the nannying involved. You are not allowed to work for free either. Getting paid by the hour was a RPITA.
