seeing the various levels of recovery kick in was quite educational for all involved. when i first implemented this failover scheme in 1998, i must confess, i never quite grasped what it would grow into. as we watched the system recover, while we disagreed with some of the decisions it made, it did all come back up, albeit with processes migrating to unforeseen places...some of this was due to timing issues in the recovery sequence...addressing these issues causes combinatorial explosion in the algorithms...
as i said, an educational experience

i am reminded, for some reason, of an incident a long time ago, when a VAX (that was being retired) woke up after a power outage and rejoined a cluster. since the quorum rules had not been designed with this in mind, much tumult ensued.
