The successful Reiserfs is a database pretending to be a filesystem; even moreso with version 4. What's good about it is that it's open source and extensible. It can also make very good use of space and can have nearly 100% data throughput on a disc. Version 3.something is much more efficient in terms of throughput than ext2 on the same hardware and it degrades much more slowly as the number of files and their sizes grows.

I'd steer clear of Longhorn though as it appears to be M$'s first foray into the territory.

But I'm not unduly concerned about the underlying machinery as long as it works well, it can fix itself or be fixable when it does break. Filesystem data must be recoverable, even at the cost of losing metadata in the recovery process.

Not posted to the principals, who know this, but to people not familiar with these technologies. Please note that...

M$ loves not to publich any technical information; lest they lose their "compebreastive advantage" (aka monopoly). If the filesystem format isn't published (as per e.g. NTFS) so that independent forensic analysis can recover valuable data in the event of a "catastrophic" filesystem crash, then I wouldn't recommend that anybody use it. -- "Bernd Felsche - Innovative Reckoning, Perth, Western Australia ASCII ribbon campaign I'm a .signature virus!
