vm370-cms contribution to vms. in the early 70s, customers were buying up vm370-cms and the development group was growing like mad. the group had first absorbed the boston programming center and taken over the 3rd floor ... and when they outgrew that ... they moved out to the old sbc bldg in burlington mall (sbc having been sold to cdc has part of some gov. litigation). the official corporate word to the vm370-cms group was constantly that the next release would be the last and there would be no more need for vm370. finally in 76, the group was told that it was official, there would be no more vm370-cms and burlington was being shutdown. the whole group would be transferred to POK to work on something called the (internally only available) vmtool (which was purely targeted at supporting internal mvs-xa development ... and wouldn't be available to customers). If you can make it work at all, the best quality you can hope for is "adequate". IBM had better success... quite a few of the people at burlington mall weren't interested in that prospect and got jobs at DEC (a lot of them showing up in vms group). one of the principle executives responsible for that decision then shows up a number of years later ... claiming that something like 11,000 vax sales should have been 4341-vm. minor reference: .. there was a minor joke that he possibly contributed as much to vax-vms success as anybody at DEC. --
