very early in rexx cycle (when it was still called rex and before it was released) ... i wanted to demonstrate the usefulness of rex as not just another command scripting language (i.e. sort of the norm at the time and being compared to the original cms EXEC and the newer EXEC2 from ykt).

there was ipcs, a dump analysis program ... written in some 40(?) klocs buttembler; some of the objectivives were 1) working half-time over a 3month period ... 2) write in rex something that had ten times more function than the original ipcs, 3) was ten times faster than (the buttembler) ipcs, and 3) (since this was in the start of the object-code-only debate-wars) do an implementation where the source had to be shipped.

DUMPRX Release 2 - ENHANCED DUMPSCAN PROGRAM WRITTEN IN REX

Where should the type information be: in tags and descriptors 472
so one of the CP source enhancements indirectly arose from when i was originally doing cp67 pageable kernal code and trying to figure out the modified BPS loader problem ... I realized that...

DUMPRX release two is now available. DUMPRX is a program for processing IPCS abend PRB files. It is similar to the IPCS DUMPSCAN program. DUMPRX is almost completely written in REX and has several additional features not found in DUMPSCAN. The major new enhancement in release 2 of DUMPX is support for XEDIT-mode. DUMPRX will now operate as a XEDIT macro with all input and output being processed through a work file. Rather than displaying responses directly to the terminal, the information is inserted into the work file. This allows:

1) XEDIT commands to display, scan, and-or search the DUMPRX replies.

2) save and restore the complete log of the terminal session(s) buttociated with the DUMPRX analsysis of a particular PRB file.

3) allow the specificiation of particular screen tokens for use as arguments in DUMPRX commands.

Optionally available are updates to the CP source which enhance the ability of DUMPRX for use in problem determination.
