Your list of options were not based on looking at the problem from his point of view. Reading later posts shows that you're beginning to get a glimmer of his problem and frustration.
This is one, and ONLY one example, of his problems with lack of documentation and lack of an easy way to tell software how to and how not to do stuff.
Of course. This happens whenever somebody is doing a flavor of research. Think about that. This is work that has never been done before. So how in the world can a compiler developer anticipate anything that a researcher might want to do? Yes, you are buttuming he's doing work that has been done before now and that his problems wrestling with the computer have already been anticipated and solved. It is impossble for this to occur. Soft-hardware developers can make pretty educated guesses but that's all they are: guesses. We won't know how our products will be used at the cutting edge of computing until people like Herman play. One of the problems I'm seeing here is that the fine art of interviewing the expert has been lost or is an impossible thing to do via this medium we call newsgroups.
