Yes! For people who are creating new maths, it sucks.

And I'm talking about people who need to be able to create new notations as they use the computer to "see" if their latest little hypothesis about a numerical recipe works. These are also people who need to see if the iron can do the computation as the theorist proposes. It should not take more than typing speed to find out how the hardware does certain things.

Herman is in statistics. Others are creating new algebras. Thus they can't get those algebraic optimizations because these people haven't created them yet. However, you will use well-established mathematical principles when you do that project. It is those principles that people like Herman are creating. It is impossible for us to distribute softwas that these people can use because the knowledge doesn't exist yet. It is their job to create that knowledge.

The rapidly diminishing math section had the stats take up the largest percentage of the shelf-footprint. The good news is that a half of a stack is now taken up by Unix manuals (it used to be two or three books). The bad news is that the f***ing-certification poo took up half a wall.

The tech books now comprised 50% of the stores square footage in that area. Science, math, and business is getting squeezed out. The fact that stats is the largest percentage subject on the math shelves tells me that this numerical biz is getting popular. If a sophisticated user like Herman is finding using the computers difficult, what do you think all the inexperienced ones will find?
