Where should the type information be 188But he wouldn't be complaining about that. I think that you don't know the nature of the work that a math type does. More below. The student Herman was talking about was doing grad work. At that level a student had better not have blank looks. You keep underestimating the level of sophistication of Herman and his ilk. You still don't understand his work. You keep buttuming he has to be using engineering principles. He is not. His method is much closer to the Scientific Method than an engineering method. You are looking at the topic from an engineering POV. Let me try to explain it this way. Herman is reporting his diagnosis as his symptom. None of this is similar to the kinds of work Herman's trying to do. Klein bottle is a 3-D Moebius strip. I'm trying to get some to think about the future in a longer time frame than last decade. This discussion has been insisting that Herman use a computer the way everybody else uses it. He can't because that's not the type of work he's doing. (give Yes! For people who are creating new maths, it sucks. And I'm talking about people who need to be able to create new notations as they use the computer to "see" if their latest little hypothesis about a numerical recipe works. These are also people who need to see if the iron can do the computation as the theorist proposes. It should not take more than typing speed to find out how the hardware does certain things. Herman is in statistics. Others are creating new algebras. Thus they can't get those algebraic optimizations because these people haven't created them yet. However, you will use well-established mathematical principles when you do that project. It is those principles that people like Herman are creating. It is impossible for us to distribute softwas that these people can use because the knowledge doesn't exist yet. It is their job to create that knowledge. I spent an hour in Barnes & Noble two days ago to buttuage my cabin fever. I walked all the back into the tech-science-business section. The rapidly diminishing math section had the stats take up the largest percentage of the shelf-footprint. The good news is that a half of a stack is now taken up by Unix manuals (it used to be two or three books). The bad news is that the f***ing-certification poo took up half a wall. The tech books now comprised 50% of the stores square footage in that area. Science, math, and business is getting squeezed out. The fact that stats is the largest percentage subject on the math shelves tells me that this numerical biz is getting popular. If a sophisticated user like Herman is finding using the computers difficult, what do you think all the inexperienced ones will find? Use him as a test subject.
