I would be about 2500 metres, I signed up with BT Broadband first, and time went by (with no broadband) , so I signed up with TE (The former Irish State company), and have a slowish broadband (some of the problems with it may involve security issues, so there is no point in discussing that ).. I believe the reason that BT didn't provide a connection was that TE, who owns the exchange, would not cooperate in BT installing their connection there, as you mention below.

No alarm here, my daughter was in rented accomodation in Dublin when there was a problem, and she now lives nearby that spot, enquired recently whether anyone had ever arrived to check on that alarm, and nobody ever had, I suspect myself that the landlord had an operating system alarm for a while, then stopped paying for it, relying on the box to deter burglers :)..
