Welch didn't advocate simply firing the bottom 10% of the workforce. His idea of differentiation has more to do with resource allocation.

Indeed, if you read Welch's book, he advocates paying the most attention to the "middle clbutt" of the workforce because those people will determine whether your company succeeds or fails.

You simply can't spend astronomical amounts as a business to "develop" the bottom 10% of your workforce. If you actually read Welch's book, he promotes the notion that all people are valuable, but they may not be able to contribute in a given company. I don't think that's a particularly controversial statement.

The main factor is that you have to modify these ideas if you want to apply them to a nation, since you can't morally defend simply deporting anyone who isn't sufficiently productive. OTOH, failing to pay attention to the middle clbutt, as the recent American regimes have failed to do, is leading to the failure of a nation.

I'm not holding Welch up as a role model here. I don't believe in role models. Welch's ideas about the corporate responsibility for the PCB contamination of the Hudson were plain wrong.

OTOH, his ideas about business management as recorded in his book, which, BTW, he gave a great deal of rethinking to since leaving GE, are on the whole well worth understanding.
