My point about Kennedy was that Eisenhower had advised him to ignore Vietnam and focus on Laos. Kennedy instead got the US involved in Vietnam and Laos promptly fell under Communist rule.
The point about Gotti was hyperbole. Gotti did spend a lot of money on community socialism and buttistance, which is why he had such a huge fan club. I think Johnson's support for civil rights was sincere, however, because it certainly cost him quite a bit politically.

Interesting Johnson anecdote: My first wife got this from the guy who used to do plumbing (not the Watergate kind) in the White House. Seems that Johnson had some unusual personal habits. In any case, he had this elaborate multihead shower installed in the White House. He kept complaining there wasn't enough water pressure, so they had to put in pumps. Some worker got in to test it and was almost knocked over. When Nixon moved in, he took one look, said: "What the hell is this?!? Get it out of here!"
