Now take a good look at this office dynamic. It is the manager who is setting the secrecy rules. I very recently said that a certain group needed serious adult supervision. Any group that thrives on keeping secrets from each other is playing a game of politics and not doing anything to meet production goals. If production is met, then you can admire it for being a miracle because completion of the product is a non-goal.

No, it's not impossible. In my area, this was done all the time. The managers' responsibilities were to time all the individual projects so the ship date can be met. The work of a manager is similar to a conductor of a 200-piece symphony orchestra. If each instrument operator kept his work secret, then one would have the noise produced by 200 instruments playing 200 tunes.

No it does not. If you bring socialism into the workplace and insist it function under those rules, you no longer have rational capitalism. I'm beginning to think that some of this management mess has been due to Tom Peters going berserk. He preaches the style of management you described up above. Perhaps he's the one who used the word "individualism" incorrectly.
