Why does my address appear as part of my name 2502On 17 Nov 2005 01:39:43 -0800 Why does my address appear as part of my name 2503 It's worth remembering that Usenet existed before Google, and all that's happened is that Google have decided to (a) archive... Sure but if Google were to become the only way to post to the groups then they could censor the posts - they could even be forced to censor the posts by the government of the country they operate in. The USENET mechanism on the other hand is inherently impossible to censor - as those that tried to ban groups like alt.binaries.pictures.erotica found.
Hmm I'm not so sure about that - for example if I send an advert to a paper I am giving implicit permission to them to publish my words and-or pictures contained in that advert. If they expect me to be transferring copyright then there has to be an explicit instrument to do so. Many things are impossible to enforce on the internet - for example certain very wealthy and influential companies would very much like to enforce a ban on people sharing their copyrighted material such as music and films. They have had very little success in doing so despite pouring substantial sums of money into the attempt. AFACIT the real problem is getting more than a tiny percentage of the people that matter to consider doing anything other than burning fossil fuels. -- The computer obeys and wins.
