Gunenberg need no defence, its free (less cost to access to Internet, of course), and only contains works out of copyright.. One can refer to what was thought of, and written, in centuries past. I have looked up books that one would think were ages out of touch, and found out how good and revelent they were, for instance, recently (Sir Richard Burtons "Pilgrimage to Al Medinah &"), which I later bought in book form. There are a lot of books there unavailable elsewhere.

Besides that, about Twain, in "Huck Finn", he has Huck agonizing about aiding a slave to escape from bondage, which a person in the period that the book is set in would have. Twain was too good a writer to have done anything else, at the time the book was actually written, the Civil war was over, and the slaves had been set free, but Twain allowed us to enter the mind-set of people of an earlier time, and shows us that attatudes change (in this case, for the better). Also Cooper, in his most famous book, "Last of the Mohicans", shows the mindset of the American (or English?) settlers at the time of the FrenchandIndian Wars, when they regarded the English Army as a defence against the French-Indian opponents. The recent film exaggerates the conflict between the English Army and the colonists, to an extent that didn't appear in the books. Cooper wrote the book way after Independence, but didn't fudge his work. ( The book also ignores, as does most US works on the period, the fact that the Iroquois (sp?) raided the French settlements as English allies)
