Can anyone help? I have had to get rid of my former address and nick because I was getting too much spam, more than sixty a day. I see there is a way to change my nickname each time I write a message, but most people have a nick without address; do they change each time they post?.The headers of your post indicate you use Mozilla as your news reader.

The helpfiles for setting up Mozilla should explain how to use an email address that is different from your account name (your ISP account name that is used to allow you access to your ISPs news servers.) Your ISP customer support pages might help. Or you could do a google search using the words ' munged Usenet '.

Phil Weldon Good. I will look. I am pretty sure at this point that the problem is not so far back...

When setting up Mozilla there should be several pieces of information to fill in:

*Name (anything you choose)

*email address (anything you choose that looks like an email address)

*server name (supplied by your ISP)

*account name (choosen when you signed up for your ISP account, must be valid)

Carl Pearson I know, but I thought that on the folklore group there would be some understanding for people whose knowledge of computers...

*pbuttword (choosen when you signed up for you rISP account, must be valid)

The 'munged' email address you use should have a domain name that is guaranteed to be invalid, and to not be in use. The domain names 'invalid.com' and 'example.com' are reserved for such purposes. Your 'munged' email address should include an alphanumeric string, followed by

The 'Name' field and the 'email address' field you fill in will appear in the second 'From' field. This is not the same as complete anonymity; with cooperating from your ISP your account can be identified, but spammers can't get your real email address.

If you want have a reply email address available, include it in your signiture in a disguised form that can be easily harvested by spammers. (By the way, there are Internet worms that harvest email addresses from Usenet news servers, then use these harvested email addresses as targets of infected email AND that as faked 'From' addresses. Two years ago, when the worm 'Swen' was active, one of my addresses, used often in Usenet posts, got a peak of 2000 infected emails per day generated on systems infected by 'Swen.' I kept the same email address, but it took six months from the time I began munging my Usenet email idenbreasty for the 'Swen' infected emails to stop. Only the use of Magic Mail Monitor kept my mail box clear enough to receive valid email.

Since I don't have Mozilla installed, I can't give you the exact sequence of clicks, but Mozilla helpfiles should do the trick. Just remember that the information used to access newsgroups through your ISP must be valid, the information you use to identify yourself in your posts does not need to be valid. There may be additional options with Mozilla. I sort of strike a compromise by using my real name and an invalid email address. Of course there are many other ways that your real email addresses that you use in filling out forms end up on spammers lists.
