The prewar progress towards WWII was a general European one, everyone realized that Germany would try to undo the Versailles peace. At that time Churchill was a discredited figure, a believer in old values no longer applicable (gold standard), a man who changed parties at a whim. It took the cold dash of reality of the War for the UK to realize that he was a good man (given he had been warning of the growing problem for years) to lead. Also realize that he was installed before the full ghastliness of the position was evident, with the fall of France... The UK had been investing in preparedness for the war as far back as the Germans (check the timelines), but they wasted mbuttive resources in outdated schemes, the defence of Singapore, Battleships, outdated airplanes, etc, and their officer corps was clogged with timeservers.. It has been calculated that it was 1943 before the Germans started to pay for the War at the same rate that the British had been since 1936 or 37.. , and at that time, with the decisive battles lost, it was too late. The Germans spent their money well. I am presently reading the story of D-Day from the German viewpoint. One of the main German units blocking the Allied advance into France was the Hitler-Jugund (sp?) SS Division.. Recruited from children born in late 1926, hurriedly trained over the previous 6 months or so. I think that shows the awfulness of war on its own. -- greymaus XBOX 360 2688 On Sat, 28 Jan 2006 17:42:40 +0000 (UTC), Andrew Swallow Given that Israel has far more qualified people to put into the field, and that at one point in that war they were losing people...
