covered.

Yup. Any public service worker who doesn't live in town will not show up. If it's a large town (city) comm is very important. Take a good look at the WTC and what happens when comm infrastructure exists and people can't talk to each other.

Another thing to observe is the hurricane in New Orleans. None, and I mean absolutely none, of any of the public service workers were capable of dealing with this small mess. All they knew how to do was flap lips. It wasn't until an army general showed up and started yelling orders (instead of whinging), that people began to work at cleaning up.

I don't think so. This is a side effect of the governing heirarchy populated with people who only know how to do politics and nothing else...like clean a fish for supper. Our coasts are in this state. The midwest is in better shape but that will disappear with small farm ownership (I think).

This is my point. All people should be buttigned a job in the case a mess happens. I don't give a poo if that job is making paper clips by hand; every single man, woman, and child should have a task to do the minute the news says x has happened. This is not getting done; this is why I state that our politicians are not taking 9-11 seriously. The only group in this country, who does take it seriously, happens to be Bush.

EXACTLY!!! If we've lost so much in a mere couple of years, I've been wondering how much we've lost in other areas over the decades.

Yes. I'm also thinking about that and trying to do a small bit about it.

I think the need for autos would disappear in most of my scenarios. To prevent a complete utter mess, the key is going to be communication over long distances. My contention is that, to keep this working, the computer biz (with its old knowledge) is crucial. This is why I am discussing it here in a.f.c. I do not waste people's time. If I thought that this subject was not applicable to this newsgroup, I would not be posting here.

I didn't mean all of you knew it all today. What I mean is that those who do know can teach the others.

isn't

Stan Barr might have said: Much pruning has occurred There is a move afoot to eliminate the requirement here in the U.S. There's one every so many years. This...

Yup. Your disadvantage is the longitude. But you can fish.

I can probably count, on one hand, the people in my town who do have anything in their larders. Take a good look here and in the news of the reaction when Bush tried to talk about preparing for a possible epidemic. He was hooted, mocked, and called a liar. Most people immediately buttumed that the man was talking politics (just as those here who buttume I'm only talking about politics). Nobody is stocking their larders for a couple of weeks, let alone six months.

What is worse is that the Democrats have created an atmosphere such that, if a declaration of quarantine had to be done, those who automatically buttume that Bush is a liar, will not listen and not stay at home in isolation. In fact they will do the exact opposite of anything Bush will say to do; they have the collective emotional IQ of a two-year old. They will guarantee that the epidemic will happen because they'll spread the disease.

Yea, but where do you generate the heat needed? This is the kinds of things that need to be thought about. If you had a nuclear power plant, you could generate enough heat to melt and recast any metal.

area You aren't thinking long term consequences :-). I am talking outside the immediate disaster area. It only stays up if people show up...

I know what you mean. But who has that knowledge? It can't be just in books. Doing something and knowing all the things that can go wrong (thus, avoiding wastage learning that old knowledge) is important. If you don't know something, knowing who does know is key to survival. We don't have that kind of networking other than the yellow pages...which means that the telephones have to work which gets back to keeping the comm up.

Right. I think it has to get back less than 50 years, or the stuff that Morten talked about a couple years ago trade will happen. The only way I can think of is to keep comm up and running. This implies the computer biz.

Good.

YES! That takes comm. You have radios but how long will the batteries last? Not long enough. Farms cannot be vacant for more than a day, if the stock is penned away from the feed (which is always the case). Cows have to be milked to continue milk production. This is twice a day.

I mean outside the immediate disaster area. There the comm infrastructure should stay up long enough for that - at least, enough of it... And New Orleans is...

I'll have to read more. That's not what I'd read. The rioting was fomented by Lenin and his thugs in his longrange plan to remove royal rule. The Czar had already started to distribute ownership of farm plots to the peons. This was bad because it control of these people and production away from the fat cats.

Well, that is always the problem...you can force mementary behaviour but you can't keep it up without more and more manpower for enforcement. The key to herding all cats is to arrange their goals to be going in the same direction as your goals. This is called capitalism.

I'll have to study more since you think I've got it wrong.

That is just the seaports. I don't know much about those years and what happened in the world. It seems like people skip these and they're the most important years in the 20th century from the POV of the world.

I don't know. Don't people get what they deserve?

So, did the Czar do a good think from your perspective?

On Thu, 09 Feb 2006 01:45:05 -0500, Don Quixote We have the same problem in...

But I don't think the similarity is odd. I would think it would be odd if it hadn't been similar.

How is it an issue?

What? I've been to think of some and cannot. All others takes time greater than the time it takes to starve to rest.

BAH
