On a Windoze box, you're being F-ed when the power indicator is lit.

We can't have that now, could we?

Tell me about it. I just bought my wife a brand-new laptop. Alas, it's running Windows XP - and little things are constantly flashing up on the screen, then vanishing before we can figure out what they are or what invokes them. At least it's sitting behind my OpenBSD firewall, and she's using The Bat for e-mail instead of LookOut Excess, and Netscape instead of Internet Exploder. She also knows the dangers of running anything that arrives in e-mail, so she should be relatively safe. I just hope that her box isn't wreaking havoc on the rest of my LAN, although I'm not paranoid enough to put it into a DMZ.

The worst part is that she was talking to some friends the other day, and had one of those forehead-slapping moments when she suddenly realized, "I could have gotten a Mac!" It was a Homer Simpson "D'oh!" moment for me too. I had just buttumed that even a Mac would have cut her off from her cow orkers, thanks to Microsoft's push to corrupt all data transfer standards.

Maybe that could be a new advertising slogan for Apple:

All sizzle, no steak. Unfortunately, that's what sells nowadays.

failed Good grief. If the technique available for this kind of failure is a complex bit pattern, the biz has really gone...
