We have a `free' education system here, Ireland. All one has to do is get good marks at an exam, and get a semi-free university course. Over the last few years, there have been league tables of which schools are getting most pupils past exams.. Some fee-paying schools (and substancial fees at that) dominated the tables. That is besides the fact, whish is beside the point you were making, that in some schools there is no tradition of doing well, just of getting through.

He wasn't afraid of computers, which a lot of people were, and indeed still are.

Banks get their money from `ordinary' people. I know one V.C. who dosn't use his own money, but after a good experience, has an almost unlimited line of credit. Most of his private wealth is `firewalled' away from the high-risk area.

Gigantic yacht in some South of France port. People go there just to see it, and the others lined along the quay. Reports say he is an OK guy, specially after being very sick.

Hard to know, because people who fly in and out just don't see what is happening. Some of the anthropology guys wrote that one would have to live in a country for years to really work out how they work. He was criticising the `eminent' people, Margaret Mead, Levi-Strauss, etc.
