Now think about where this knowledge resides. Libraries are going high-tech. My public library is dumping books that haven't been "read", where "read" is a minimal definition. Book burning by zealots has reared its ugly head again.
I'm worrying about the dispersal. It can be so widely dispersed that there is no set (as in Debt Collection in one place) of this knowledge. To do one thing requires knowledge to do another thing. It's intertwined but today's economies has become specialized. It is those connections that I'm worrying about breaking and disappearing. I'm not writing this well.
No, the persons go after those they feel are their intellectual superiors. IOW, jealousy. Anybody, who has an ability to think well, experiences this hatred during his lifetime. All it takes is a breakdown of law and order and the targets are removed.
Sigh! Now think. These people have not, and will not, tie the two events together. All they'll do is blame the government, or Bush, or whomever for their troubles; they have a 100% reality filter which includes how stuff gets done. For a small example look at New Orleans.

There goes the comm infrastructure. IIRC, that was the first thing to go when the USSR broke up.

It's the same thing. What is the "dollar value" of a bar of gold other than the number of dollars that you would need in order to buy either the gold...
Yea, I hadn't even thought about lubricants. That shows you how much I don't know how stuff gets done.
Right. That's been the history. That and dyes.
It's not that. They'll need to figure out how to keep people who live in the city busy.
